Since the founding of the city, Chiayi has already taken deep root in art and culture. Chiayi City is devoted in the development of all kinds of art and humanities activities, which fill the city with cultural energy and populate it with artistic talents. It never fails to live up to the name “Capital of Painting” as dubbed during the Japanese occupation period. The annual Chiayi City International Band Festival has even put the city in the international music scene.
Since 2014 Chiayi City has been holding documentary art festival, which is the first of its kind in Asia. By combining the elements of capital of painting and music – two elements native to the city - and extending on the idea of “Image”, Chiayi demonstrates itself as a cultural city with Chiayi City International Art Documentary Festival. With documentary art films at its core it opens the artistic international horizon of Chiayi City and ushers in the new page of its art.
Upholding the spirit of facilitating conversations between the public and art practitioners and also to elevate international exchange, Inner Treasure, the 4th Chiayi City International Art Documentary Festival breaks new grounds in art and culture. Art documentary brings to Chiayi a rich artistic energy and allows the public to experience the vitality of art. It also bridges the city with the world, through which Chiayi speaks to the international audience.
This edition of film festival brings together outstanding local and international art documentaries. A total of 49 films are shown, of which 10 are world premieres, 16 show the first time in Asia and 14 in Taiwan. Many international directors are invited for talks, including directors from Czech, Thailand, China and Hong Kong. It gives the public of Chiayi a chance to be in face-to-face contact with the directors, and allows them to appreciate these outstanding and deep documentaries. I sincerely hope Chiayi City International Art Documentary Festival becomes more and more active, turning itself into an unmissable platform of art documentary for art practitioners. I also hope that through this festival the world will see the rich artistic vitality of Taiwan and also the charming art and culture of Chiayi.

THE INFINITE SOUTH
Artistic Director: Huang Mingchuan
The Chiayi City International Art Doc Film Festival has never stopped for breath on its journey of exploring “the South”. When excellence is being suppressed, one can always look to the ever-present “South”. And even though “South” is merely a geographical term, it is also an expression of the shallow beaches beyond its vast oceans. There are infinite undiscovered trenches in “the South”. This film festival penetrates the dark blue waters in order to uncover what lies on the seabed of “the New South”.
This year, a number of themes have been fused together to forge the “jewel” that is the festival’s inner core. The first is “Precious Words of Hers”, which closely addresses women’s issues and develops more profound discussions on the topic of female culture. “Hard Pursuit” is the manifestation of the adversities that documentarians will never be free of, as well as the exploration of the inner struggles of artists and art film directors who are constantly in pursuit of new goals. Of course, we will never forget to pay tribute to our exceptional role models, something we have accomplished through “Timeless Soul”. Lastly, there is “Past at Present”, which presents the past in a deeply meaningful manner while also displaying contemporaneity and diversity. This edition of the festival is by no means an old wine in a new bottle.
Different from its contemporaries which tend to discuss women’s issues from a physical perspective, the Chiayi City International Art Documentary Film Festival focuses more on how spirituality, professionalism, religious choices, as well as the resistance against social pressures, can drive life to new heights. This value does not only apply to the exploration of women’s issues, but also any topic related to “the South”. At one of this year’s forums, titled “East Coast Aesthetics”, there will be a screening of a number of short films made artists from the East Coast. The protagonists of these works are mostly female, demonstrating how unconventionality in geography and gender can give rise to extraordinary achievements. “The South” really is a boundless territory in the realm of art documentary film. There is no doubt that the journey begins with a heart which brims with idealism. With that in mind, let us strive to rediscover the precious “jewel” that awaits us in “the South”.
